India 500 Words Essay

So far I've learned a lot of things about India through watching this movie Slumdog Millionaire. I've learned that India's capital city, Mumbai, is the most populated country in India and it is also the 2nd most populated city in the world.
The country itself is the 2nd most populated country in the world with 1,173,108,018 people. The birth rate for India is 21.34 births/1,000 population. It's death rate is 7.53 deaths/1,000 population. The average male in India will live to be about 65 years old. The average women in India will live to be about 67 years old.
India is also a very poor country. Its holds a third of worlds poor.  41% of India falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day.  The 4 main castes are brahmans, princes, merchants, and servants. The caste system in India is a system of social stratification and social restrictions in India in which social classes are defined by thousands of endogamous hereditary groups.
I've also learned about the slums in Mumbai. Slums in India have always existed. Today slum dwellers make up 60% of Mumbai's population, that is approximately 7 million people living in the slums. In 1985 the government tried to help out people living in the slums. This project was called the Slum Up-gradation Project, pretty self-explanatory. The program targeted only 10-12% of the slum population, those who were capable of upgrading their homes.
India's film industry is very popular and wide-spread. Bollywood is India's cinema that is based on the Hindu language that is based in Mumbai.  Bollywood is India's version of our Hollywood. But, since their film industry is in Bombay, it is called Bollywood.  Unlike Hollywood, California, Bollywood does not exist. Hollywood is an actual city. Bollywood film music is called filmmusic (from Hindi, meaning "of films"). Most of their films are musicals that include singing and dancing.
India is a source, destination, and transit country for men, women, and children that are trafficked for forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation.  Women and girls in India are trafficked for things such as commercial sexual exploitation and forced marriage. Children are forced into labor such as factory workers, domestic servants, beggars, and agriculture workers.
The movie we are watching relates to real life India very much. A lot of the problems Jamal faces happen is real life. For example when Jamal and Salem are searching for Latika, they found her in a child exploitation place. She was used for adults pleasure, but we do not for sure if she was used for sex. But it may be a possibility she was, considering she was a young girl. who went by the name of "Cherry". Also, Salem and Jamal grew up in the slums of Mumbai. They also were forced into labor such as singing on the streets of Mumbai begging for money. Meanwhile all of their money was given back to the Gangster who put them to work for him.At the end of the movie, it is very much like a Bollywood film when Jamal and Latika sing and dance in the subway after they reunite.
